Nautilus CCF-X2 Saltwater Reels

 nautilus cff-x2 saltwater fly reel

The newest addition to the Nautilus family is the CCF-X2 Saltwater Fly Reel. Already highly regarded, the dual action CCF-X2 drag system features twice the stopping power at over 20lbs, twice the smoothness and half the startup inertia as the standard CCF,  Not surprisingly the CCF-X2 68 model won Best of Show Salt Water Reel at the 2013 Internation Fly Tackle Dealer Show.

The CCF-X2 Disc Braking System is an upgraded, stronger, lighter version of the cork and carbon fibre brake of its predecessor. It features TWICE the drag surface in a dual action brake configuration. Coupled with hybrid ceramic bearings, the reel delivers less than 1% startup inertia at all drag settings. This brake unit is feather light and can be easily switched from RH to LH retrieve. The Brembo® brakes of fly fishing.

ActivSeal – Perpetually repels game über-arbor. contaminants from braking system.

Hooker – Wrap your line or hang your fly on it.

Giga Arbor – Reel in more than a foot per turn and feel the fish flopping back to you on the surface. A unique design feature of these spools are grooves that let the bottom of the backing breathe to promote faster drying. THE giga arbors have redefined large arbor reel design.

Laser-ID – This has become a favorite product to come out of the Nautilus think-tank. We laser etch a white spot to the inside of the spool which leaves a textured surface that can be written on. Use a thin permanent marker to write on the line weight or any other information you need. No more washed out or peeled of line stickers. If you ever need to change it, wipe it off with alcohol for a blank slate.

InfinAdjust – The over-sized CCF-X2 drag knob features the InfinAdjust drag control system: six turns of the drag knob take you from zero to 20+lbs to allow you to precisely adjust your drag tension without fear of over adjusting.

The award winning 6-8 version is now available in the UK, and the 8-10 and 10-12 will be arriving in April at Fly Fishing Tackle Co UK

J W Young Centrepin Reel

J W Young Heritage Trotting Reel by John WilsonOne of the problems of trotting for Grayling, now that the winter is here, is trying to find a good trotting reel. There are very few made today, you can look on eBay for very expensive old match or Avon reels, but this reel gives you the same quality with modern production techniques, made by J W Young the Heritage Reel by John Wilson has 2 ball bearings, click check, micro adjustable disc drag, a unique multi-position line cage and comes with a certificate of authenticity. For all centrepin work from trotting for Grayling or Roach to stret pegging for Carp. This takes me back to when I was a young lad and we used to stret peg for big Perch on the Coln, well they were big to me, over 2 lbs, I also used to do a lot of trotting on the Thames and its tributaries, I would have loved to have had a reel of this quality.

Super Reels from Abel

Abel Super Series Fly Reels

Abel have made Large Arbor reels since 1995.
During those years they have developed the perfect ratio of arbor (hub) size to the overall spool. Too big a hub and there’s not enough backing capacity; too small and you’ve defeated the purpose of a large arbor spool.
Abel drag systems are made from the finest Portuguese cork. The cork compresses and serves as a brake. They don’t use materials used in airplane brakes because they’re not stopping airplanes! Their drag systems are second to none. Just service the cork occasionally with a little Neat’s-foot oil.
Abel have vintage reels at lodges and camps in Alaska, Lees Ferry, Mexico and Belize used as rentals and loaners that are 16 and 17 years old. That tells you something about proper maintenance, and the durability of these reels.

Loop Opti Dryfly Reel

loop_opti_reel_blackBack from Scotland, a good trip, spent in good company. The fishing I did, the wife, non-fisher person had priority on my time, was very good considering the weather. Had some long walks to some amazing Lochs where the trout fought like tigers, a nine-inch fish put a good bend in my Loop Cross S1 6# rod, I’m glad I was using 6lb Maxima line. The only downside of the trip was my 4# Orvis LA Battenkill reel falling out of my rucksack somewhere on a mountain track! Looking for a replacement as Orvis no longer make this reel, I have decided to get a Loop Opti Dry Fly to replace it, having looked at all the other reels we have, yes I will have to pay for it and no I will not claim on insurance, my fault for not securing it, if more people accepted responsibility for their own stupidity, insurance would be a lot cheaper! Wouldn’t it?
