Now I know a lot of trout fishermen treat their reels as just somewhere to store the fly line, which in most cases is fine, but it’s the exception to the rule that makes investing in the best reel possible a wise decision. When playing a big fish, be it a salmon, seatrout or a large brown, on a small river, and due to the rain this year the fish are already well upstream, you need a reel that will stop them in their tracks with out breaking off, a reel that will pick up line quickly if they run towards you and reel that is light for its size, which is why I invested in a OPTi reel.
This is the one I chose although OPTi reels come in sizes from Creek to Big. Each model is optimized for specific fishing applications. Creek and DryFly, with a silky-smooth drag that handles the thinnest leader. The Runner, which is built on the same principles as its big brother Speedrunner, is the obvious choice for light double-hand rods or slightly heavier single-hand rods. Speedrunner features an inset handle andextra diameter for speedsters. Megaloop comes with dual braking plates anda super sturdy construction for tackling really big fish. The king of the hill is the OPTi Big. With an absolutely huge drag system it is designed to stop anything.
The OPTi reel will be your best and most beautiful friend for life!

Went out Seatrout fishing last night too no avail, but it was a nice night and as usual I learnt something. Just as it was getting dark enough, I put my feet into the water – ankle deep- you have to do this to get any chance of casting, after a cast upstream to get my line length right, a seatrout exploded at my feet, I have found this time and time again with brown trout, even when you are bank clearing they will come and investigate any change to their environment. So next time I will enter the water and just stand there for 30mins or so.
I found that my Loop Cross S1 6# coped very well with the confined space when used with a 6# Evotec 85 line.
The hunt goes on as the fish are now well up the system, and more and more are coming through. Will have to tie more flies until the right combination is found

My two sons and my gorgeous wife took me fishing on Fathers Day.
Caught this beauty with a rod from our local recycling depot. broken
float fixed with insulation tape and a little bit of bread on the
hook. Fishing basics!!
The second award was to Paul Armishaw from Uffington Oxon with this pic
We had fished for a couple of days and it had been poor so we decided
to make an early start. This picture was taken at approx 06:00. It was
a beautiful morning with some mist and the other boat just visible. I
was uncertain what it would be like taking it facing the sun but I am
very pleased with how it turned out.
And third but no means least was this pic from Glyn Williams of Holyhead Anglesey
This is a photo of my son with his first trout. He didn’t like touching

Snowbee Prestige Nubuck Wading Boots are reviewed in this months Trout & Salmon. ‘If you like leather, these nubuck uppers are smart and should wear well. The tread is good but add more grip with studs supplied.’
The uppers are constructed from a new, tough, waterproof Nubuck leather. This top grade leather is imported from a specialist tannery in Korea, where the genuine Nubuck leather is specially treated to make it waterproof. Previously genuine leather for wading boots was unworkable, as it tended to absorb water after prolonged use, losing it’s rigidity and hence ankle support.
Colour: Two-Tone Tan
Sizes: 7 – 13
However, this new leather is different. It absorbs the minimum amount of water and dries quickly, so the problem of airline baggage weights being exceeded by heavy boots on the return trip is a thing of the past! This new waterproof Nubuck leather, avoids the problems associated with earlier Nubuck, which tended to harden and go stiff after repeated soaking and drying.
• Reinforced upper all around the boot, toe and heel with hard wearing Rush Rubber, a tough synthetic rubber material, for support and chafe resistance.
• Easy-glide lacing eyes, plus 3 quick-lace hooks at the top for quick lacing.
• Thick, foam mid-sole for protection & torque resistance.
• Fitted with the new Mk.2 version of our XS-tra Grip Rubber Sole.
• Supplied with 40 hardened screw-in studs and a stud socket tool.
• Weight: 1,700g (61oz) per pair.
The boots were commended in a recent international angling trade awards ceremony.
